Louisiana private university enrollment rises, while public systems see drop

Enrollment in Louisiana two-year and four-year public universities fell between fall 2020 and fall 2021, but private colleges saw a significant jump.

Private college enrollment was stagnant before the pandemic but picked up in 2020, with the opposite happening in public systems, according to data published by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.

At two-year colleges, enrollment remained virtually unchanged between 2020 and 2021 but fell by 12.7% between fall 2019 and 2020, during the first year of the pandemic. At four-year colleges, enrollment fell 3.8% from 2020 to 2021, while the system had grown the year before by 2.7%.

However, at private colleges, enrollment grew by 10.8% from fall 2020 to fall 2021. During 2019-2020, enrollment had fallen by 8.2%.

It has been reported that Louisiana colleges saw a drop in enrollment during the pandemic, although many institutions recorded record-breaking freshman classes. State community colleges have also seen a 14% drop in enrollment since 2016.
