Overworked. Stressed. In need of a mental health day. If any of this feels familiar, you may be experiencing burnout, and according to the World Health Organization, it’s very real. Burnout is now an actual medical diagnosis based on the following criteria: exhaustion, increased mental distance from your job, negative or cynical feelings about work, and lower productivity. If you think you have burnout, talk to a medical professional who likely will first rule out adjustment disorder or other anxiety and mood disorders. Researchers stopped short of classifying burnout as a mental disorder, but noted that even so, it’s one of the most widely discussed mental health issues today.
