As artificial intelligence remakes workplaces, LSU Online is rolling out a series of short, flexible certificate programs aimed at strengthening the one set of abilities that doesn’t go out of style: human skills.
The new durable skills certificates focus on communication, critical thinking, leadership and collaboration — competencies employers say they need as automation changes how jobs get done. University officials say the offerings are designed for working professionals who want skills that transfer across roles and industries.
Often labeled “soft” or “power” skills, durable skills include communication, creativity, adaptability, resilience and teamwork. Advocates say they boost productivity, support agility and help workers pivot as business priorities shift.
Demand appears to be strong. Eight of the 10 most requested workforce skills fall into this category, according to the 2025 “Durable by Design” report from America Succeeds. LSU Online’s certificates deliver those competencies through short-form courses that translate quickly to on-the-job use.
The programs reflect a broader trend in higher education: pairing technical know-how with human-centered strengths. As employers recalibrate job requirements in the age of AI, LSU Online’s move signals that mastering emerging tools matters — but so does the ability to think clearly, lead teams and communicate well.
