Health Tip of the Week, sponsored by Baton Rouge General: How does COVID-19 affect the heart?

We’ve learned that coronavirus can have harsh, long-term effects on the heart. It was clear early on that those with underlying cardiovascular problems experienced complications from COVID-19, but experts are also finding that those who were asymptomatic had mild symptoms, and even those with no underlying heart disease are still reporting some form of cardiac injury after COVID-19. COVID-19 can cause heart damage through factors like lack of oxygen or inflammation of the heart. These should be carefully monitored, so even those with no known pre-existing conditions should follow up with their primary care physician after having COVID-19.
