Three state employees took $98,507 from the Office of Motor Vehicles for personal use between March and June 2017, according to an audit released by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor this morning.

The audit says the employees were fired from the OMV and arrested last year for the theft of the OMV’s petty cash, deposits and license reinstatement transactions. The employees’ names were not listed.

In its written response included with the audit, the OMV says it handles transgressions like the thefts with severity and haste. The OMV also cites old computer software and money handling policies as factors that could have made the thefts possible. This is the third time in four years the OMV has had problems with misappropriation of funds.
