As a string of storms continues to dump rain on Louisiana and much of the Gulf Coast, the Greater Baton Rouge area remains under a flood watch.

That flood watch is in place until 7 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Much of the Capital Region has already seen between 1 and 3 inches of rain, and the NWS predicts new rainfall amounts between 1 and 4 inches Wednesday.

As of this morning’s publication deadline, three local school systems had announced changes in their schedules:

  • Ascension Parish Public Schools is excusing late arrivals on Wednesday.
  • The Iberville Parish School District has closed all public schools and offices for Wednesday.
  • St. Mary Parish Schools has closed all schools and offices for Wednesday, though students in grades 9-12 will engage in remote learning.

A regularly updated list of local school closures can be found here.

While no major road closures have been reported, the office of Baton Rouge Mayor Sid Edwards is advising East Baton Rouge Parish residents to avoid unnecessary travel.

In collaboration with BREC, city-parish officials have positioned sand and sandbags at nine locations across the parish. Two shelters are open in Baton Rouge. Here’s where sand, sandbags and shelters can be found.

The mayor’s office is also advising residents to follow Red Stick Ready on social media for updates and general emergency preparedness and response tips.

All area hospitals remain open.
