Man shot by Baton Rouge police officer was under investigation for possible child abuse
Authorities say a man who was shot and killed during a struggle with a Baton Rouge police officer was being investigated for possible child abuse.
Calvin Toney, 24, attempted to flee when a child welfare case worker and the police officer showed up at the apartment complex on McClelland Drive where the fatal shooting took place, Louisiana State Police say.
Preliminary results of an autopsy performed today revealed Toney died of single gunshot wound to the chest, the East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office says.
Toney struggled with the officer, who used a stun gun on him multiple times before the shooting, according to state police.
The Department of Children and Family Services worker asked for the police escort because of the “nature of the allegations and previous history involving Toney.”
Officials have not identified the officer.
