Health Tip of the Week, sponsored by Baton Rouge General: Should you be tongue scraping?

    Dr. Walter Jung

Tongue scraping may seem like another tedious step in your already jam-packed self-care routine, but it’s actually an important part of your oral hygiene and overall health. While we sleep, our digestive system remains awake, removing toxins from our body that end up on the surface of our tongue. If we don’t scrape away these toxins, they are  reabsorbed by the body and can lead to digestive issues and a compromised immune system. Tongue scraping is also more effective than a soft-bristled toothbrush at removing odor-causing bacteria from the surface of the tongue. No amount of scraping can replace a good tooth brushing, but adding tongue scraping to your brushing and flossing routine is key.
