Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady system in talks with one of Mississippi’s largest hospitals.

The Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady announced today the group is in talks to take over St. Dominic’s Health Services in Jackson, Mississippi.

The 571-bed hospital would be the first in Mississippi for the group behind Baton Rouge’s Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

The Dominican Sisters of Springfield, Illinois, which operates the Jackson hospital said dwindling numbers make it “unsustainable” for that religious order to continue overseeing St. Dominic Hospital, which has about 3,000 employees.

“We want St. Dominic’s to continue to serve Mississippi for generations yet to come, but our diminishing numbers cannot sustain our role as its sponsor,” Sister M. Dorothea Sondgeroth, associate executive director of St. Dominic Health Services Foundation, said in a statement. “It has been a difficult decision, yet it’s the right one for our organization and for our community because it will help St. Dominic’s secure its future.”

St. Dominic would become part of the Our Lady of the Lake system, which also includes hospitals in Lafayette, Monroe, Gonzales and Bogalusa.

A handover is expected early next year.
