Ochsner Medical Complex—The Grove, Baton Rouge
CATEGORY: Architecture

For this medical complex, Ochsner Health System sought an architecturally distinctive beacon that would take full advantage of its prime location along Baton Rouge’s I-10 corridor. The design team conducted a thorough site analysis to capitalize on traffic flow and ensure optimal visibility from the interstate while integrating the site and surroundings—even connecting with an existing bike and walking trail.

The capacity to deliver comprehensive, responsive and tailored patient care is a direct result of its intentional, future-looking design. The client requested a one-stop-shop facility to support holistic, team-based care. In this out-of-the-box structure, patients can easily and efficiently connect with and receive care from multiple providers and specialists within a single visit, removing a significant source of frustration and anxiety from the healthcare experience.

A medical office building, robust 10-bed micro hospital, and state-of-the-art surgical center support primary care, urgent care, and technology-infused clinics organized in a series of flexibly designed pods. At the core of each pod, a nurses’ station and provider workspaces foster a team approach to patient care. Cores are surrounded by exam rooms, treatment rooms and clinic access from the linear lobby. This creative, growth-minded architectural approach allows clinical spaces to expand seamlessly without requiring renovation to patient areas.

The facility balances cutting-edge technology with interior and exterior spaces that create a uniquely low-stress patient and staff experience. The natural light-filled space features soft, organic textures and materials that continue throughout the co-located clinical, surgical, laboratory, pharmacy and dining spaces. This user-informed clustering of services allows staff to collaborate and thrive, while providing comfort, safety and accessibility for all users.
