Health Tip of the Week, sponsored by Baton Rouge General: What to look for when selecting a sunscreen

RecentĀ reports have found many popular sunscreen brands were contaminated with benzene, a harmful carcinogen linked to leukemia, lung, liver, breast, ovary and GI Tract cancers. This makes it even harder to know what to look for in your sunscreen brand. A few things to know when picking out sunscreen this summer are: always go for broad-spectrum; opt for water resistant options; and know the ingredients. Broad spectrum sunscreen ensures you have both UVA and UVB protection. Choose brands that include titanium dioxide or zinc oxide as they reflect the sun’s rays from your skin.
