Rather than wheeling clunky workstations in and out of patient rooms, nurses can now use a smartphone or tablet to access patient information and administer medications using barcode scanners, Woman’s Hospital announced today.
The Baton Rouge hospital says it is the second hospital to implement Meditech’s Expanse Point of Care app system.
The software provides nurses with real-time notifications of medication and patient care needs, and is designed to mobilize clinical workflows using streamlined chart navigation, documentation, worklists. It also allows for safe medication administration by using barcode scanning technology. The tech was first rolled out at a Brookhaven, Mississippi, hospital in January.
In the first week of use at Woman’s Hospital, nurses administered more than 3,000 scheduled medications using the new software.
Cheri Johnson, chief nursing officer of Woman’s Hospital, said in a press release that the service was one that nurses had been requesting and that the software’s features help prevent medical errors and reduce risks.
