    Fifth surge: Coronavirus infections rose by 21,900 confirmed and 7,119 probable cases over the weekend, according to the Louisiana Department of Health’s noon update. As NOLA.com reports, hospitalizations increased by 273 over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, for a total of 1,794 hospitalized with coronavirus statewide. Overall, the number of people hospitalized with COVID rose 62% over the last week. Read the full story.  

    Capital access: The U.S. is planning to hand out $10 billion to help upstart companies gain access to capital in a bid to rev up business in disadvantaged communities and spur a broader economic recovery from the pandemic, The Wall Street Journal reports. The State Small Business Credit Initiative will direct money to states, territories and tribal governments for programs that provide venture capital or encourage private lenders to issue loans to small firms.     New store: Women’s fashion boutique Versona is opening its eighth Louisiana store, in Perkins Rowe, on Jan. 20, according to a company announcement. Versona carries apparel, jewelry and accessories.
