Roundup: Cancelled events / State Fair gumbo / Consumer prices rise

    Weather warnings: The tropical storm expected to impact the Baton Rouge area is prompting closures and event cancellations across the city. LSU will be closed Friday. The Baton Rouge bike share launch, originally scheduled for today, has been canceled and rescheduled for July 18, and The Louisiana Art & Science Museum’s “Art After Hours” event, initially scheduled for today, has been postponed to August 1, among other events that have been moved.     ‘Gumbo of Fun:’ The State Fair of Louisiana announced its theme for this year’s event will be “Gumbo of Fun.” The event, held Oct. 24 through Nov. 10 in Shreveport, has been a tradition since 1906, drawing an average of 425,000 people through the gates annually. Authorities say the fair has a $24 million economic impact on Shreveport’s economy. Read the full story.

    Price check: U.S. consumer prices rose just 0.1% in June, as cheaper gas prices were offset by higher rents and auto costs. The Labor Department said this morning the consumer price index increased 1.6% in June from a year earlier. That is down from 1.8% in May and the second straight drop. However, excluding the volatile food and energy prices, core inflation rose 0.3% in June, the biggest increase in 18 months. It rose 2.1% from a year ago. Read the full report.
