Southern Classic Chicken is set to enter the Capital Region after developer Donnie Jarreau purchased a restaurant building on South Sherwood Forest Boulevard.
The Shreveport-based chain plans to move into the space at 3410 S. Sherwood Forest Blvd. that was previously Big John’s Fast Fries, Best Boilers, Royal Kabob and other eateries. The location will be the first of three corporate-owned Baton Rouge locations for the chicken franchise.
Jarreau purchased the property through SSF Holdings LLC from Giovanni Mucciacciaro Enterprises LLC for $550,000, according to sales documents filed last week with the clerk of court’s office.
Jarreau expects the Sherwood Forest location to open within nine months. A property on Florida Boulevard is under contract and should open within the next year, while Southern Classic Chicken is also looking for a spot on Plank Road for its third Baton Rouge location.
“We thought it’s a great demographic,” Jarreau says. “It’s a mixed demographic and mixed income. We thought it was a great start. The accessibility is really good. We thought the site was a good one for our quick-service restaurant.”
The building currently on the 0.85-acre site will be demolished and the new restaurant will be constructed outside of the current building footprint. The completed project is expected to cost around $2 million, according to Jarreau.
As Daily Report noted last year, Southern Classic Chicken had been eyeing at least six restaurant locations in the Baton Rouge area.
Southern Classic Chicken is the latest fried chicken franchise to enter the Capital Region. Red Bird Fried Chicken, a Covington-based franchise with locations in New Orleans and Covington, opened a Denham Springs location in July.
Southern Classic Chicken has been operating for 35 years, with 15 Louisiana locations and two in Texas.
