Mitsubishi’s $7.5B acquisition of Haynesville assets boosts its Louisiana footprint

Mitsubishi Corp. has finalized its $7.5 billion acquisition of Aethon Energy Management’s Haynesville Shale assets, expanding its natural gas footprint across northwest Louisiana and east Texas, The Center Square reports.

The deal includes approximately 400,000 gas-producing acres and underground pipeline infrastructure. The acquisition complements Mitsubishi’s existing ownership stake in the Cameron LNG export terminal, helping secure a reliable, low-cost natural gas supply for its global LNG operations and overseas customers.

The acquisition is part of a broader trend of Japanese energy companies investing in the Haynesville region. Earlier this year, JERA completed a $1.5 billion purchase of the South Mansfield gas field and supporting infrastructure, while Tokyo Gas acquired Rockcliff Energy’s production and pipeline assets in east Texas for $2.7 billion in 2024.

Mitsui & Co. has also purchased acreage in east Texas to support its LNG supply commitments. Together, Japanese companies are expected to produce about 4.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, roughly 30%-35% of the Haynesville region’s total output, by 2026. They have also acquired stakes in LNG export terminals, strengthening control over their LNG supply chains.

To oversee its new assets, Mitsubishi has created a stand-alone operating subsidiary, Adamas Energy, which will be led by former Aethon managing partner Gordon Huddleston as CEO.
