Mark Cuban says the secret to long-term career success is simple: Invest in yourself.
As Inc. writes, it’s a habit he calls both powerful and often overlooked. As the entrepreneur and television personality describes it, when you invest in yourself, you become your own competitive advantage. When you invest in learning, for example, you expand your toolbox with skills others may lack, and over time, that edge compounds, he says.
“The fact that I recognized that learning was truly a skill, and that by continuing to learn to this day, I’m able to compete, keep up, and get ahead of most people—because the reality is, most people don’t put in the time to keep up and learn,” Cuban recently said in an interview. “And that’s always given me a competitive advantage.”
Investing in yourself to sharpen your abilities also helps build confidence and clarity, he advises. When you upgrade your skills, you feel more capable, and that confidence later shows up to meetings and tough decisions.
