The LSU athletic department is facing a projected $26 million deficit for the current fiscal year, following a $44 million shortfall in fiscal year 2025-26 and cumulative overspending of $177.5 million over the past six years, Louisiana Illuminator reports.
The $44 million shortfall was largely driven by LSU’s $21.5 million in direct student-athlete compensation, the maximum amount allowed under new NCAA rules, with the Tiger Athletic Foundation covering last year’s deficit. LSU President Wade Rousse says the university is developing a new revenue-generation plan that could include a private equity arrangement tied to media rights for LSU sports, potentially providing upfront funding in exchange for a share of future profits.
The plan has not yet been publicly announced and is awaiting a valuation of LSU’s brand. Rousse says LSU would retain control of its brand and that the model could eventually generate revenue for the broader LSU System, although the immediate need is to address the athletics deficit.
At the same time, LSU is seeking to expand its academic research capabilities as it pursues a goal of becoming a top-50 research university. Chancellor Jim Dalton says LSU needs to increase federal research funding by about $150 million and hire 100 to 150 faculty members over the next five years.
For the first year, LSU is requesting $31.7 million from the state to hire 45 faculty members and provide research startup packages, along with another $21 million for competitive graduate student stipends. Lawmakers will consider the requests when the legislative session begins in April.
