Legislation would allow a statewide vote on St. George school system next year

State legislators are mulling over proposals that would bring an end to the saga between the newly incorporated city of St. George and East Baton Rouge Parish, The Center Square writes.

A pair of bills, including a constitutional amendment, aim to grant the St. George Community School System the same authority as a parish to operate its own school system. The amendment adds St. George to a list of communities already treated “as parishes” for education funding purposes, including Zachary, Central and Baker.

The legislation would not create the school system but ensures that if St. George does become a school system in the future, it will be entitled to the same funding and constitutional treatment as other independent districts.

If approved by lawmakers, the amendment would be considered by voters statewide on April 18, 2026.
