‘LaPolitics’: Turnover is cresting at the State Capitol

State Rep. Troy Romero of Jennings resigned from his post last week, bringing the number of open seats in the House and Senate to five.

Romero informed Speaker Phillip DeVillier of his formal resignation last Friday, indicating his final day in office would be Sunday, Dec. 14.

“It has been an honor and privilege to have served the citizens of District 37,” Romero wrote in his resignation letter. “I am truly grateful for the experience and look forward to continuing to have a meaningful impact in the great state of Louisiana.”

Romero was not available for comment.

The speaker has since added Romero’s open House seat to the Saturday, Feb. 7 ballot. Runoffs for the special legislative ballot, as needed, will be held March 14.

Other seats in play will be those of former Reps. Jason Hughes and Matt Willard, freshly elected to the New Orleans City Council. They officially resigned from the Legislature earlier this month.

Plus, seats formerly held by former Sen. Joseph Bouie of New Orleans, now leading Southern University New Orleans, and former Rep. Chad Brown of Plaquemine, whom Gov. Jeff Landry tapped to head the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control, will be up for grabs.
