Louisiana could soon shift to a new conservative-led accrediting body, Louisiana Illuminator writes.
The shift comes under recommendations from Gov. Jeff Landry’s higher education task force, which voted—at an unpublicized meeting—to pursue membership in the emerging Commission for Public Higher Education.
The group, created by six university systems in the South, is seeking fast federal recognition so accredited schools can access financial aid.
The move reflects growing conservative friction with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, though SACS doesn’t mandate DEI requirements.
The task force also urged legislation allowing Louisiana colleges to use any federally recognized accreditor, removing SACS references from state law, and barring accrediting standards that conflict with state statutes. Additional proposals include mandating universities publish all accreditation documents online.
Most task force members were appointed by Landry or his allies, with few exceptions.
