How top US companies are building talent from day one

High-performing companies are rethinking how they build talent, starting early and investing consistently, The Wall Street Journal writes

A new analysis of 1,700 employers finds top firms prioritize hiring recent graduates, rotating them across roles and providing structured coaching to accelerate growth. They emphasize both technical training and soft skills like leadership and communication, while removing barriers to internal mobility.

Companies such as Procter & Gamble and General Motors also formalize career development, with scheduled goal-setting, feedback and advancement planning built into operations.

The result is stronger retention, clearer career pathways and a steady pipeline of internal leaders. The findings highlight a shift from reactive hiring to intentional talent cultivation, an approach increasingly tied to long-term performance, workforce stability and competitive advantage.
