Westward growth: Baton Rouge-based LUBA Workers’ Comp is now offering coverage to businesses in Texas. LUBA currently covers businesses in Louisiana and Mississippi and Arkansas through select, independent insurance agencies. LUBA says it plans to deploy the same growth strategies in the Texas market that it did to expand to other markets. “Steady, measured growth is important to us and diversifying geographically ensures long-term strength and stability for the businesses, agencies and communities we serve,” says Trent Bondy, vice president and sales manager in a press release.
A time to save: The annual back-to-school supplies sales tax holiday has been set for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 7-8. During the two days, most retail purchases are exempt from the 4% state sales tax. Local sales taxes apply to purchases unless the local taxing authority creates its own exemption. The sales tax holiday exempts state taxes on the first $2,500 worth of purchases. The holiday applies to supplies, clothes and other items, but excludes vehicles, meals and taxable services such as laundry, printing and telecommunications services. The Louisiana Department of Revenue has a full rundown of eligible and exempt items.
Input wanted: LSU AgCenter economist Kurt Guidry is conducting a survey to find out how the AgCenter can better serve industry stakeholders through research and extension programs. Guidry is gathering information from soybean farmers, crop consultants and agricultural industry personnel. The survey responses will be used as the AgCenter tailors its programs to better meet changing needs of the industry. “The survey will provide an opportunity to identify critical areas of research and education needed to maintain the industry’s competitiveness,” Guidry says. “It will be important that producers, consultants, and input and service providers from all across the state complete the survey so that the results reflect the needs of the entire industry.” The survey can be taken online through Nov. 30.
