With today’s opening of the 318-parking lot on site, major construction has essentially wrapped up on the new $41.2 million Main Library on Goodwood Boulevard, the library system says.

The Main Library, which broke ground in 2012, held a soft opening in January and a ribbon-cutting ceremony in April.

“The opening of the parking lot brings us closer to completing this innovative Main Library at Goodwood project, which is a jewel in the crown of our 14-branch Library System and offers amenities, programs, resources and services unparalleled in even some of the bigger city libraries across the nation,” says EBR Library Director Spencer Watts in a prepared statement. “Now that we can offer more convenient parking and drive-up services, I’m sure our patrons will be enjoying the facility and all it has to offer more often.”

The parking lot includes 18 spaces for disabled patrons, as well as 21 spots each for high-occupancy and fuel-efficient vehicles. In a few weeks, a drive-through book drop-off and pick-up window area also will open, and an electronic marquee sign at the front entrance of the parking lot will also be installed. The parking lot is located off Goodwood Boulevard, where the original Main Library used to be located and was torn down. Patrons have been forced to park at the neighboring BREC Theatre off Independence Boulevard during construction.
