Why businesses may need to rethink how they plan

According to Axios, we have entered a new era of “post-processable velocity,” where the pace of technological and AI-driven change is faster than individuals, companies, markets and governments can fully absorb, understand or respond to in real time.

The major shift is from information moving faster than humans can process to capabilities changing faster than strategic thinking can keep up. What individuals can do, what AI can unleash, what small teams can build, what competitors can launch and what entire industries can automate can now change within weeks, making traditional planning horizons of months or years increasingly unreliable.

This marks a transition from the information revolution that accelerated around 2007, when smartphones, social media, cloud computing and streaming dramatically increased the speed of information and communication.

For nearly two decades, that acceleration continued before converging with AI and creating something fundamentally different. The defining change of the past era was the velocity of information. The defining change now is the velocity of capability. As AI improves, costs fall, competition increases and adoption spreads, the pace of change continues to accelerate.

The implication is not that strategy is dead, but that traditional approaches to strategy are becoming less reliable. Decisions can become obsolete before they are implemented, and assumptions about technology, competitors, customers, staffing or regulation can quickly change.
