Louisiana lawmakers are advancing new rules aimed at addressing privacy concerns tied to emerging recording technologies, including smart glasses and AI-enabled devices, Louisiana Illuminator writes.
House Bill 410 would require individuals to notify others before recording in-person conversations or risk civil penalties, a shift from current law that allows one-party consent.
The proposal, introduced by Rep. Laurie Schlegel, comes amid growing scrutiny of so-called “manfluencers” and viral social media content that features women recorded without their knowledge, often leading to harassment. Lawmakers say existing privacy standards have not kept pace with rapidly evolving technology.
The bill was amended to require notification rather than full consent from all parties and includes exceptions for documenting crimes, recording public officials and capturing events in public settings.
However, the measure faces opposition from the Louisiana Press Association, which warns it could hinder journalism and newsgathering, setting up a broader debate over privacy, free speech and the limits of emerging tech.
