West Baton Rouge Parish is set to get a new Starbucks—the first for the parish on the other side of the Mississippi River.
A lease has been inked with the company to open a store in front of the Walmart on Highway 1 in Port Allen, says Jonathan Walker, a broker with Maestri-Murrell Commercial Real Estate.
Starbucks will be leasing a 2,200-square-foot space in a new shopping center and will have a drive-through and patio.
Weather pending, construction on the shopping center is expected to begin next week and the store is slated to open in the first quarter of 2019.
On the west side of the river, the closest Starbucks stores were in Houma and Thibodaux or Acadiana. The coffee giant is almost two years into a five-year growth plan that set a goal of opening 12,000 new stores globally by 2021.
Also joining Starbucks will be AT&T, which will be relocating from its current location about a quarter-mile away. Walker, who represented the landlord, Port City Holdings LLC, in the transaction, says that they have an additional 3,800 square feet to lease.
Jonathan Fawer with Corporate Realty in New Orleans represented Starbucks in the transaction.
Young homebuyers are increasingly choosing to move across the river to West Baton Rouge Parish, a Business Report feature detailed earlier this year. With a 2.56% population increase, West Baton Rouge was the state’s sixth fastest-growing parish from 2014 to 2016, according to the Census Bureau and NOLA.com.
