St. George opponents to hold petition signature ‘Withdraw Day’

A St. George opposition group will host “Withdraw Day” on Saturday, Oct. 20, at various locations around Baton Rouge, where those who have signed the petition to create a new city will be able to withdraw their names.

The announcement came Thursday afternoon after news broke that St. George organizers plan to submit their petition to the city-parish Registrar of Voters on Monday.

The opposition group—Better Together/Residents Against the Breakaway—employed the same tactic in 2015 when the group helped thwart the first St. George petition attempt through its signature withdrawal efforts.

In a message posted on its Facebook page and sent to Daily Report, Better Together says withdrawal forms, as well as an economic study on St. George, are available at its website.

St. George organizers say their petition currently has more than enough signatures to get the incorporation effort on the ballot. The petition needs valid signatures from 25% of registered voters within the proposed city’s boundaries. In June, organizers said they had already collected more than 10,000 signaturesD of about 13,000 needed.

Organizers have until Nov. 27 to obtain the required signatures, but say they’re ready to submit early in anticipation of challenges from city-parish leaders and opposition groups.
