Ghana and Jamaica are negotiating a proposed $60 million arrangement to address a major gap in Ghana’s alumina supply, a key input for aluminum production, according to AlCircle.com.
Under the plan, Jamaican bauxite would be shipped to the Atlantic Alumina Company refinery in Gramercy where it would be processed into alumina and then exported to Ghana for use in its growing aluminum industry.
The discussions involve Jamaica Bauxite Mining, or JBM, and Ghana’s efforts to develop an integrated aluminum sector, with support from Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. The proposal builds on an established trade relationship: Ghana imported about 28,900 tons of Jamaican alumina worth $11.1 million in 2024.
The two countries have cooperated on bauxite and alumina for decades, including a 2005 proposal for Jamaica to help Ghana develop its own alumina refinery. The latest discussions could give Ghana an additional source of alumina while giving Jamaica a renewed role in the bauxite-alumina supply chain.
The proposed arrangement would also link Jamaican bauxite production with Louisiana refining capacity and Ghana’s aluminum industry.
