BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana is getting another $77 million in federal stimulus money for health care.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that, as part of the stimulus, states will pay less for their share of Medicare coverage for prescription drugs for those residents who are Medicaid-eligible. For Louisiana, HHS says that means an extra $77 million that the state would have owed for the drug coverage will be rebated.
Louisiana Health Secretary Alan Levine says the money first will be used to pay off a current year deficit of up to $40 million in the state's Medicaid program.
Gov. Bobby Jindal's spokesman says the governor will propose to use the rest of the money in next year's budget to replace one-time money like surplus and tax amnesty dollars.
