State begins assistance process in West Monroe

Tuesday, May 5, 2009

WEST MONROE (AP) — The Louisiana Workforce Commission's Rapid Response team has begun conducting orientation sessions for the 202 workers who will lose their jobs when Shaw Process Fabricators closes its West Monroe plant June 27.

Shaw announced last week that it plans to close the facility, even though its overall pipefitting division is profitable for the company.

Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Stephen Moret said last week that the plant was one of the company's smallest and contained some of its oldest equipment, which made it less efficient and more vulnerable for closure.

The Workforce Commission will open a transition facility in the operation at 800 New Natchitoches Road on Wednesday.

Among services to be provided include job placement assistance, job counseling, job search workshops, labor market information and resume preparation assistance.
