Chelsea's back in court

Monday, May 4, 2009

Chelsea's Café is back in district court today in what could be a do-or-die hearing for the Perkins Road restaurant and bar. About 100 people gathered at the hearing. The state office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control raided the restaurant in January. After a court hearing in March, the ATC told owner David Remmetter he needed to change his zoning status within 30 days. Remmetter says he took steps to get rezoning through the Metro Council. Two weeks ago, ATC agents returned to Chelsea’s, this time to yank the restaurant’s liquor license. Judge Trudy White granted a temporary restraining order so Remmetter could keep his business open. This prompted the ATC to immediately take steps to have the restraining order dissolved. Last week, White dissolved the restraining order and set today's hearing. Since then, Remmetter has been closing Chelsea's at 10 p.m., only serving lunch and dinner and canceling live music acts.
