BATON ROUGE (AP) -- The Democratic incumbent and his Republican challenger are raising money at a furious pace in the campaign for the congressional seat representing the Baton Rouge area.
U.S. Rep. Don Cazayoux has gotten over $164,000 since Sept. 14. The New Roads Democrat had nearly $140,000 in the bank on that date, after spending nearly $2 million on the race since he was first elected to the 6th District seat in a special election earlier this year.
State Sen. Bill Cassidy has raised nearly $88,000 in just over two weeks, and has a Baton Rouge fundraiser on Monday featuring Vice President Dick Cheney. The Republican had over $475,000 in the bank on Sept. 14.
The election is Nov. 4.
Recent fundraising totals were unavailable for Michael Jackson, a Democratic state lawmaker who signed up for the race as an independent. Jackson, of Baton Rouge, did not file a campaign finance report for the period ending Sept. 14, according to the Federal Elections Commission.
Jackson did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
