FARMERVILLLE (AP) -- Chicken producer Pilgrim's Pride has filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Company spokesman Ray Atkinson says Pilgrim's Pride is reorganizing and not liquidating its assets. He says the company will keep operating.

The Pittsburg, Texas-based company sought the bankruptcy protection in a filing with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Monday.

Pilgrim's Pride employs almost 1,900 northeastern Louisiana workers. Most work at the company's Union Parish complex, where more than 7.1 million pounds of chicken are processed each week.

Overall, Pilgrim's Pride employs 2,650 workers in Louisiana with a $65 million annual payroll. It also makes $33 million in annual payments to 260 independent poultry growers in Louisiana.
