Trey Little quickly figured out what he didn’t want to do: accounting. After graduating from Louisiana Tech in 1991, he was an accountant for three months before he called that career quits.
“I told my dad, ‘There’s no way I can do this for the rest of my life.’”
Sure it was tax season and that didn’t help anything, but Little doesn’t miss it a bit. Instead, he joined his father at Jay Little and Associates.
Now going on his 16th year in the business, Little is the co-owner and partner of the Besselman-Little Agency, which specializes in the design, installation and administration of employee benefit plans. His expertise is dealing with larger groups of 100 or more that are typically self-funded.
“Being around my dad and that type of business basically all my life was something I was always interested in doing.”
And this business seems to be treating him quite well. The past president of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) Baton Rouge and Louisiana chapters, he was named the Baton Rouge Advisor of the Year by the Baton Rouge chapter.
When Little is not in the office, he’s probably on the fairway. Or at least he used to be before he broke his ankle in a father-son soccer game. Prior to the “wrong place at the wrong time” injury, he would play and help organize fundraising tournaments for the Fore Kids Foundation, Mary Bird Perkins and Baton Rouge Green.
As for his dad, he’s still involved in the business, working every day. Connor and Cameron, the soccer-playing boys, might end up following in the family footsteps. But Little and his wife, Melissa, aren’t quite sure which one. One thing’s for sure: Little probably won’t mind if they don’t want to be accountants.
If you could have dinner with any three living people, who would they be?
“Warren Buffett, Tiger Woods and Bill Gates.”
