Less than a year ago, Richie Adams was working for himself out of his house. Today, he’s leading the five-person team that is River Road Creative, a hot boutique firm specializing in design production for film and TV that has become something of a household name around here.
A big break came early this year, when Adams’ firm was hired to produce the opening sequence for the Fox cop series K-Ville, which depicts post-Katrina life in New Orleans. River Road Creative designed the typography for the opening credit sequence, and also shot the video material.
About that same time, the firm won the equally impressive contract to design the title graphics for the 2007 Morgan Stanley ad campaign, now airing daily on CNN. It put the fledgling company on the map and confirmed what Adams knew all along: That he was doing what he was supposed to be doing.
“It’s pretty neat to think that in just a year we’ve grown this exponentially,” he says.
A Baton Rouge native, Adams knew several years ago he belonged in the creative end of design and production. He began his career on the account services side of advertising, but quickly realized his talents lay on the creative end. He went back to school and did a stint with an agency in L.A. before returning to Louisiana to direct a feature film.
It was a risk, but one Adams is glad he took.
“I never in a million years thought I would move home,” he says. “But there are some really interesting things happening—seeing the revitalization of downtown and Mid City and the thriving arts scene—it’s a real neat time to be back home.”
As he looks to the future, Adams is focused on developing his career as a director, while also trying to figure out how to grow River Road Creative into a one-stop shop for branding, identity, design and production. It’s a challenge, but Adams is confident he’s in the right place at the right time.
“We’re really in a unique place right now, but it’s very exciting,” he says. “There’s a lot happening here.”
If you could have dinner with any three living people, who would they be?
“Saul Bass, the guru of title graphics who is known for doing Alfred Hitchcock’s title graphics as well as for designing the logos of such corporate giants as AT&T and United Airlines; director and actor Ron Howard; and actor Paul Newman.”
