Now that Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr has officially stepped down, speculation about Les Miles leaving LSU to take the job has reached a fever pitch. Miles had 49% of the vote in a Detroit News online poll which asked Wolverines fans to pick a replacement. John Wangler, a former Michigan quarterback and longtime friend of Miles, told the Detroit News that he believes the Tigers’ coach is headed to Ann Arbor. “Les is a loyal guy, and he's not going to mess around with this. It's not going to be a circus. (Michigan athletic director) Bill Martin has to pick up the phone and say to Les, 'It's time to come home.' It's not going to be protracted, trust me," Wangler said. Miles still has three more games with the Tigers, including the potential BCS Championship Game on Jan. 7. Michigan will have to either wait seven weeks for Miles to take the job, or the LSU coach may announce he's leaving before his team plays in the postseason. "Either way, the uncertainty will affect both programs' recruiting," the newspaper says. Read the article here. Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel says the situation could be solved by an LSU loss to Arkansas on Friday or in the SEC Championship Game. Mandel notes that Miles may find going to Michigan to be in his best interest "considering the anticipated backlash in Baton Rouge should his team fail to fulfill its lofty season-long expectations."
