3 La. firms make 2012 Fortune 500 list; Shaw slips
As was the case last year, three Louisiana-based corporations have landed on the 2012 Fortune 500 list, which was released this morning. However, the placement of the state's largest three companies—Baton Rouge's The Shaw Group, New Orleans' Entergy and Monroe's CenturyLink—shifted quite a bit from last year. With reported revenues of $5.9 billion last year, Shaw slipped to No. 412 on this year's list, down from No. 336 in 2011 and No. 309 in 2010. Entergy also fell on the 2012 list, from No. 213 last year to No. 239, on revenues of $11.2 billion; Entergy was 219th on the 2010 list. CenturyLink, conversely, is listed as the top "rising star" of the 2012 list, ranked No. 171 overall—up from 334th last year and 423rd in 2010 (when it was still CenturyTel; prior to a $11.6 billion merger with Embarq). CenturyLink's reported revenue of $15.4 billion in 2011 represents a 118% year-over-year increase. As for this year's complete Fortune 500 list, Exxon Mobil—with 2011 revenues of $452 billion and profits of $41 billion—reclaimed from Wal-Mart its position as the nation's top corporation. Wal-Mart was ranked No. 1 on the 2010 and 2011 list, after taking the spot from Exxon, which was last ranked No. 1 in 2009. Chevron, ConocoPhillips, General Motors, General Electric, Berkshire Hathaway, Fannie Mae, Ford Motor and Hewlett-Packard round out the top 10 largest firms on the list.
