Jindal to education activists: 'The truth and the people are winning'
Gov. Bobby Jindal addressed a crowd of nearly 350 school choice activists at the American Federation for Children's third annual National Policy Summit in Jersey City, N.J., yesterday. "You've got the truth and the American people on your side," Jindal told the crowd, according to an AFC press release. "The truth and the people are winning when it comes to education reform." Jindal touted the recently passed statewide expansion of the private-school voucher program, which the AFC says is part of "a comprehensive education reform package" that could apply to "as many as 380,000 students across Louisiana." However, John White, Louisiana's top education official, says 2,000 is a more reasonable estimate of how many students might participate in the program during its first year. Critics say the program violates the state constitution's requirement that "minimum foundation program" dollars be spent on public schools.
