Cajun Constructors brings home industry 'Oscar'
For its work on an extensive loop levee system in St. Bernard Parish under contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baton Rouge-based Cajun Constructors is one of just 15 firms across the country to be honored with a 2012 Alliant Build America Award from the Associated General Contractors of America—billed as the "Oscars of the construction industry." The awards annually recognize the nation's most significant construction projects. The USACE project in St. Bernard Parish came about after Hurricane Katrina. Charged with designing and building the region's most advanced levee protection system by June 1, 2011, the corps turned to Cajun Constructors. "The project involved construction of more than 43,000 linear feet of floodwalls, installation of six steel gates, relocation of 12 utility crossings, modifications to an existing pump station, and demolition of a drainage structure," says the AGCA. "During construction, Cajun Constructors took special steps to make its goal of zero crane incidents a reality, and implemented several advancements in pile driving to make the work more efficient." Despite a five-month delay, AGCA says, Cajun Constructors met the deadline by compressing an 11-month schedule into seven months. The work netted Cajun Constructors the award in the Federal & Heavy New category. The Louisiana chapter of AGCA also won an award for Best Overall Public Relations Campaign. "Louisiana AGC established community service projects that served as positive publicity for general contractors in response to a statewide publicity campaign that negatively viewed the construction industry. With several successful charity events held throughout the state, Louisiana AGC has raised over $750,000 since the inception of its charitable effort," the AGCA says.
