EBR school board to take up THRIVE charter school Thursday

At its regular meeting Thursday, the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board will consider an application for a new charter school that aims to open this fall if approved. Sarah Broome, founder of THRIVE, says the school would be one of just a handful in the country in which students live at the school during the week and go home on weekends. "It's a completely unique charter concept targeting at-risk students," she says. "There are very, very few in the country. Less than 10, to be certain." THRIVE is seeking type I charter designation, she says, which only requires local school board approval. "I'm very hopeful, but we'll just have to see what happens. If we are approved Thursday night, then our target is to open by August," she says. "If we are denied, not by any stretch of the imagination does that mean it's the end of the game." The school board meeting will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at the board's offices at 1050 South Foster Dr. Learn more about THRIVE at its website here, and see the full agenda for Thursday's school board meeting here. —Steve Sanoski Read full story here.
